September brings a lively combination of concerts, food and popular culture to Malaga. From 3 to 6 September, the Fiestas de la Victoria will take place across four venues, with activities ranging from indie music to verdiales folk performances and a traditional street party.

If you are searching for things to do in Malaga at the end of summer, add this celebration to your plans. Here, you will discover what these festivities are, why they take place, what is included in the programme and how to experience one of the standout events in Malaga in September.

What are the Fiestas de la Victoria and why are they celebrated?

The Fiestas de la Victoria are a new cultural initiative promoted by Cervezas Victoria, Malaga City Council and Malaga Provincial Council. The aim is to revive the spirit of earlier popular celebrations and introduce local traditions to new generations. They are not, therefore, the first festivities of their kind in the city’s history, but a renewed way of celebrating Malaga’s identity.

The name pays tribute to Santa María de la Victoria, patron saint of Malaga and its diocese. Her connection with the city dates back to 1487, while her patronage was officially proclaimed in 1867. Every 8 September, one of Malaga’s official local public holidays, the city celebrates the Day of Nuestra Señora de la Victoria. You can learn more about her history on the Diocese of Malaga website.

The date is also closely connected to Cervezas Victoria, which was founded on 8 September 1928. Today, contemporary music, crafts, biznagas, local food and folklore come together in a Malaga celebration with a distinctly local character.

The celebration continues on 8 September. Traditionally, the day includes Mass at Malaga Cathedral, floral offerings and the Virgen de la Victoria procession in Malaga, during which the image returns to her Sanctuary accompanied by brotherhoods, bands and numerous local residents.

The 2026 religious timetable has not yet been announced. If you would like to include this event in your Malaga plans, check the official calendar of the Real Hermandad de Santa María de la Victoria closer to the date. Remember that the local public holiday may also cause changes to traffic and opening times.
